What is the difference between Osteopaths, Physiotherapists and Chiropractors?

All professions use different forms of manual and physical techniques. The main difference between each profession is they have different principles of how the treatment is approached and applied. Osteopaths treat the area of pain but also treat areas that may influence the biomechanics of that area. Chiropractors will focus mainly on manipulation of joints. Physiotherapists will focus on mainly exercise prescription. At our practice we aim to cover all areas for the best results.

Do I need to be referred from my Doctor to see an Osteopath?

No, Osteopaths are recognised as Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) alongside Physiotherapists. Your practitioner will take a medical history in your consultation and form a treatment plan for you. After taking your medical details if we think you should consult another medical professional we can refer you.

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend on the complaint and condition itself, and you as an individual. Your Osteopath will discuss the nature of your condition or complaint and what to expect in terms of recovery and management. They will then form a treatment plan to suit you to get the best results.

Does the treatment hurt?

Your Osteopath will treat your individual condition with your health and safety at the forefront of every treatment. A very small number of techniques can cause minor short lived inflammation, however once this settles the area should improve and feel better. Our aim is to reduce your pain and improve your mobility. We will make the treatment as effective and comfortable as possible for you but If you have any concerns please talk to the osteopath.

Will I need to undress for the treatment?

You may be asked to remove parts of clothing appropriately in order for the osteopath to treat the affected area. We provide purpose-built changing and toilet facilities. Please ensure that the area of pain is accessible to the Osteopath during the treatment. You have the option to bring a Chaperone to your appointment and to wear clothing that makes you feel comfortable.

Is Osteopathy just for back pain?

No, Osteopathy can help treat various musculoskeletal injuries and conditions that affect the body. See here for more information.
